Repentance

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins

and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."  1 John 1:9

God's Warning:

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy." Proverbs 28:13

To the lukewarm church in Laodicea: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:19

“Jesus...  said to them, 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Mark 2:17

“...if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will." 2 Timothy 2:25

“...afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears." Hebrews 12:17

God's Call to Repentance:

“From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17

Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent." Revelation 2:5

To the Corinthian church: "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death." 2 Corinthians 7:9-10

To the believers in Ephesus:Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent." Revelation 2:5

Jesus said, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:14

“ ...there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance." Luke 15:7

Our response to His call

"Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my thoughts;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting."
Psalm 139:23-24

“When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy... yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You... saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness’; and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul... then hear in heaven... and forgive Your people who have sinned against You." 1 Kings 8:46

The world's response to His call

They refuse to return. I listened and heard, but they do not speak aright.
No man repented of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turned to his own course as the horse rushes into the battle." 
Jeremiah 8:5

“And the Lord has sent to you all His servants the prophets... but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings... and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not harm you.’ Yet you have not listened to Me,'  says the Lord, 'that you might provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt." Jeremiah 25:4

“...unless you repent you will all likewise perish." Luke 13:3, 5

“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,' says the Lord God. 'Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.  Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit." Ezekiel 18:30

“Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent:  'Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago.'" Matthew 11:20

“He said to them, 'In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place. 'And 'whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, 'shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. 'Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!' So they went out and preached that people should repent." Mark 6:10

“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." Luke 15:10

“ When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, 'Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.” Acts 11:18

“... lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced." 2 Corinthians 12:21

I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds." Revelation 2:21

“But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands....  And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts." Revelation 9:20-21

God's grace and patience

“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?" Romans 2:4

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9

Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth." Revelation 2:16

"When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:13-14
