Jesus Family Tomb Believed Found
:
Feb. 25, 2007 — New scientific evidence, including DNA analysis conducted at one of the world's foremost molecular genetics laboratories, as well as studies by leading scholars, suggests a 2,000-year-old Jerusalem tomb could have once held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.
The findings also suggest that Jesus and Mary Magdalene might have produced a son named Judah.
The DNA findings, alongside statistical conclusions made about the artifacts — originally excavated in 1980 — open a potentially significant chapter in Biblical archaeological history.
A documentary presenting the evidence, "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," will premiere on the Discovery Channel on March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The documentary comes from executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici.

New film claims Jesus buried in Talpiot
By DAVID HOROVITZ
:
Their documentary will be screened this week in the US, UK, on Channel 8 in Israel and around the world. The producers are said to have worked on the project with world-renowned archeologists, statisticians and DNA specialists.
/But Bar-Ilan University Prof. Amos Kloner, the Jerusalem District archeologist who officially oversaw the work at the tomb in 1980 and has published detailed findings on its contents, on Saturday night dismissed the claims. "It makes a great story for a TV film," he told The Jerusalem Post. "But it's impossible. It's nonsense."
/Kloner, who said he was interviewed for the new film but has not seen it, said the names found on the ossuaries were common, and the fact that such apparently resonant names had been found together was of no significance. He added that "Jesus son of Joseph" inscriptions had been found on several other ossuaries over the years.
"There is no likelihood that Jesus and his relatives had a family tomb," Kloner said. "They were a Galilee family with no ties in Jerusalem. The Talpiot tomb belonged to a middle-class family from the 1st century CE."
...The Daily Telegraph reported this weekend that the 10 ossuaries removed from the tomb when it was first excavated "were taken initially to the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum outside the Old City of Jerusalem. Nine were catalogued and stored but the tenth was left outside in a courtyard. That ossuary has subsequently gone missing."
But Kloner said the IAA routinely left ossuaries in the courtyard if they were not inscribed and were unremarkable, since it had no room for them all "under our roofs." He added: "Nothing has disappeared."
/The Jacobovici documentary comes more than 10 years after similar speculation about the so-called Jesus family tomb made world headlines, prompting a London Sunday Times feature entitled "The Tomb that Dare Not Speak Its Name" and a BBC documentary.
/The assertion that the ossuaries found in the Talpiot tomb were those of Jesus of Nazareth and family members was branded by The Sunday Times at the time as an archeological discovery "that challenges the very basis of Christianity."

What Bones of Jesus?
By Brent Bozell III
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
:
The Discovery Channel is hyping to the heavens its new documentary on "The Lost Tomb of Jesus." James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of "Titanic," has joined filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici in publicizing claims that a 2,000-year-old tomb containing 10 boxes of bones belonged to the family of Jesus of Nazareth. It also echoes the dopey "DaVinci Code" novel by asserting that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, that the couple had a son. They claim the son was named Judah and that all three were buried together.
So much for the Resurrection. So much for the Bible. So much for the divinity of Christ. So much for Christianity. It's all a fraud -- if one is to believe the nonfiction of the Discovery Channel.
...Joe Zias, who was the curator for anthropology and archeology at the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem from 1972 to 1997 and personally numbered the ossuaries at the center of the film, was even harsher: "Simcha has no credibility whatsoever. ... He's pimping off the Bible. ... Projects like these make a mockery of the archeological profession."
Hebrew University archeologist and epigraphist Leah DiSegni said that the names found in the tomb, Mary, Joseph and Jesus, were among the most common names of the day. It would be like finding a tomb with the name George on it in the future and asserting that it must have been the tomb of President George Bush, DiSegni told the Cybercast News Service. In addition, biblical scholar Stephen Pfann has questioned even the actual inscription on the tomb, claiming it's "scratchy" and hard to read. For all we know, it's Johnny, Mabel and Jerry.
...How do the producers defend themselves against the avalanche of criticism? It's so, so typical. On the "Today" show, Jacobovici and Cameron -- the "Titanic" director -- finally were pressed to respond to critics like Zias. They quickly fell back on the laughable concept that they weren't -- surprise! -- experts. Both said they weren't archaeologists. One insisted he was filmmaker, the other a journalist. Cameron found it "compelling" as a layman.
In other words, neither has credibility -- and neither does the nonfiction Discovery Channel.
...The Discovery Channel, like most of the national TV elite, displays a dramatic bias in target selection when it comes to religion. There are no controversies over the historical claims of Islam, Judaism or any other religious faith. But Christianity is another story. It is routinely the subject of sensationalistic TV exposes, complete with breathless claims about how Jesus "might be" the son of a Roman soldier, or he might have survived the Crucifixion. And now he's a dad, with kids.....To slander Christianity at the start of the Lenten season is unconscionable. This isn't news. It's sensationalism on a stick. Or in this case, on a cross.

Council of Foreign Relations - Task Force: Finding America’s Voice A Strategy
for Reinvigorating U.S. Public Diplomacy
: The world’s opinion of
the United States and of U.S. policy has plummeted in the wake of the war in
Iraq. The resulting widespread anger, fear, and mistrust, warns this timely
report of the independent Task Force on Public Diplomacy, are creating immediate
and long-term problems for the United States that must be addressed. The Task
Force, which first issued a report after September 11, 2001, points to evidence
that, despite administration efforts, anti-Americanism is more widespread and
dangerous than ever before. The consequences are substantial, ranging from the
difficulty faced by the Bush administration in forming a coalition for U.S.
efforts in Iraq, to the increase in new terrorist attacks on American interests,
to strained relations with America’s transatlantic partners. Among the
recommendations of the Task Force are making U.S. foreign policy more sensitive
to concerns of public diplomacy, improving communications strategies overseas,
enhancing training for U.S. ambassadors, and building congressional support for
public diplomacy. Failure to take these steps will make it more difficult for
the United States to maintain the war against terror and other policy
undertakings, the Task Force concludes.

Mock National Security Council Meeting on North Korea
:
Donald A. Baer, senior vice president, Public Policy & Communications, Discovery Communications Inc.; former Assistant to President Clinton for Strategic Planning and Communications."
Discovery's representative to the Council of Foreign Relations is Donald Baer.
....Mr. BAER: Although finding the difference between options... Amb.
GALLUCCI: Excuse me. Would you first—I just want to live with that for a moment.
Mr. BAER: This is a mock NSC meeting, isn’t it? Mr. KANTER: It’s a
mocking NSC meeting. Amb. GALLUCCI: A mock NSC is almost redundant. We’ve got to
just—please, Don. Mr. BAER: Finding the balance between blackmail, option
one, and paying the right amount, option two, I think, is a very, very fine
balance. And I suspect that’s where we’re going to come out, but I’d like some
discussion on exactly how we get to that point. Amb. GALLUCCI: Look, please. Mr.
BAER: I want to see if the third option is a real option in terms of our own
domestic politics; that is, can we treat North Korea the way, as you said, Bob,
we treat other countries in the world... ...Amb. GALLUCCI: I should tell you,
there is an additional assessment here. It also reads that “This is as
expected,” in paren, “I told you so,” and that they are simply increasing their
bargaining chip. Mr. BAER: Is this in The Washington Post? What are you reading
there? Amb. GALLUCCI: That’ll be tomorrow. Mr. BAER: No, I’m actually wondering
why my pager hasn’t gone off with a call from Wolf Blitzer [CNN ANCHOR. hosted
The Situation Room]. But... ....Mr. KANTER: As it were. And I think that this
missile test could actually impose some fairly serious strains among Seoul,
Tokyo, and perhaps also Washington. Amb. GALLUCCI: Don. Mr. BAER: Well, it’s a
mixed blessing. On the one hand, clearly, my goal of dealing with this as a
strategic proposition is out the window. We are in a crisis now which we have to
manage. On the other hand... Amb. GALLUCCI: Wait a minute. We’re in a crisis
because they did what they did on August 31st again? Mr. BAER: Yes. We’re in a
crisis situation because the second part of this is we’ve succeeded in taking
Yugoslavia off the front page, so I think that we’re in a situation now where—I
agree with the secretary of state, as I’ve said before—there’s not going to be
wild enthusiasm for continuing to fund the agreed framework out of Congress.
However, clearly, the unease about us doing nothing has been ratcheted up,
and... Amb. GALLUCCI: Can’t you get your congressmen and senators to look at the
situation as we have, what the alternatives are? Mr. BAER: Well, in order to do
that, we have to get out ahead of this quickly now, because what’s going to
happen is a lead opinion is going to begin to harden around various other
alternatives that we won’t be defining, and so it’s very important coming out of
this meeting soon that we’re able to propose to the president what w ....
