James Madison wrote (1795):
“War is the parent of armies;
from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and
taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the
domination of the few. In war, the discretionary power of the
Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors
and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds,
are added to those of subduing the force, of the people.
"The same malignant aspect in
republicanism may be traced in the inequality of fortunes, and the
opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and in the
degeneracy of manner and of morals, engendered in both.
"No nation can preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.
War is in fact the true nurse of executive aggrandizement. In war, a
physical force is to be created; and it is the executive will, which is
to direct it. In war, the public treasuries are to be unlocked; and it is the
executive hand which is to dispense them.
"In war, the honors and emoluments of office are to be multiplied....
The strongest passions and most dangerous weaknesses of the human
breast; ambition, avarice, vanity, the honorable or venal love of fame,
are all in conspiracy against the desire and duty of peace.” -

“No nation can preserve its freedom in the
midst of perpetual warfare,” warned James Madison, referring to the
relatively limited variety of warfare that prevailed until the late 18th
Century. Our ever-deepening economic crisis — the Great Unraveling of
Washington’s Empire of Debt, Death, and Deceit — tragically validates that
warning.
In our nation’s robust republican youth, our currency was backed by precious
metals, and our foreign policy was designed to promote and protect our
national interests, while minimizing entanglements in the affairs of
other nations. The foundation of the admittedly imperfect but still
admirable republic was hard money and hard law: The latter circumscribing
the appetites of rulers through abstract principle, the former providing
a more tangible restraint.
Today, the dollar is a fiat currency backed only by the “full faith and
credit” of the U.S. federal government, which in practice amounts to
nothing more than force and fraud. And Washington’s foreign policy
dictates endless involvement in nearly every existing conflict anywhere on
the face of the globe.
The republic is long dead, and the Empire is
in its death throes. Its most likely heir as nominal global hegemon, the
Beijing-led BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa)
consortium, is already preparing for the final destruction of the Empire’s
fiat dollar as the global reserve currency.(5)
It’s important to understand that this is not a foreign attack on the
dollar, as some have claimed; those who presume to rule us are the
architects of our national destruction. The ruin of the dollar wasn’t
arranged by the post-Maoist thugs in Beijing, the KGB-nurtured siloviki in
Moscow, or the retread Marxists running governments in Brazil or South
Africa; it is the result of nearly a century of official counterfeiting in
the service of messianic statism....
In their indispensable book Empire of Debt
(6), Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin, observe that the creation of the
Federal Reserve System, which is essentially the ruling elite’s
counterfeiting arm, was a necessary overture to our nation’s formal
initiation into imperial power politics--the decision to intervene in World
War I.
This intergenerational larceny has a tangible impact on the living, since
the ever-inflatable dollar has lost at least 95 percent of its value since
the Fed was created in 1913. For a while it was possible to defer a day
of reckoning, as Washington was able to export inflation overseas. In fact,
our illusion of prosperity was akin to the eerie stillness before a tsunami:
An outgoing tidal wave retreats from the shore, gathers strength, and then
returns to demolish everything in its path. We’re just beginning to feel the
initial destruction that will be wrought as the reciprocal tide of inflation
reaches our shores.
Commenting on the antics of our ruling class, Bonner and Wiggin write: “It
was as if the United States wanted to destroy itself - first by bankrupting
its economy, and second by creating enemies all over the globe.”
Unfortunately, most Americans have been willing to become party to the
deceptions on which this system depends.
“In America, all the restraints, inhibitions, and modesty of the Old
Republic have been blown away by the prevailing winds of the new empire,”
write Bonner and Wiggin. “In their place has emerged a vainglorious system
of conceit, deceit. debt, and delusion.... Americans believe they can get
rich by spending someone else’s money.... They believe that foreign
countries actually want to be invaded and taken over. They believe they can
run up debt forever, and that their debt-laden houses are as good as money
in the bank.”
For the privileged elite, the illusion continues — even as ordinary
Americans are driven to despair by every visit to the gas station or grocery
store.
As was the case in the former Soviet Union prior to the controlled collapse
of the ruling Communist Party in 1991, America’s nomenklatura (or ruling
elite) has arranged to siphon away most of the country’s wealth. Through the
October Revolution of 2008, the “Takers” — the tax-consuming class —
shrugged off the liability for several decades’ worth of politically
protected fraud onto the shoulders of the “Makers” — those of us
employed in the productive sector.
In the most recent version of a familiar and tiresome ritual, Washington
narrowly averted what would supposedly be a catastrophic government shutdown
by agreeing to a budget framework that would actually increase federal
spending. Meanwhile, as Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi points out, behind
the “official” federal government budget there is a “shadow budget” that is
at least as large — and it is in this tenebrous realm that the Power Elite
is conducting its world-historic plunder.
“After the financial crash of 2008, [the ‘shadow economy’] grew to monstrous
dimensions, as the government attempted to unfreeze the credit markets by
handing out trillions to banks and hedge funds,” observes Taibbi. “And
thanks to a whole galaxy of obscure, acronym-laden bailout programs, it
eventually rivaled the “official” budget in size — a huge roaring river
of cash flowing out of the Federal Reserve to destinations neither chosen by
the president nor reviewed by Congress, but instead handed out by fiat
by unelected Fed officials using a seemingly nonsensical and apparently
unknowable methodology....
The accumulated “outrages and lunacies”
detailed in the Federal Reserve’s loan portfolio, Taibbi writes, make it
seem as if “someone sat down and made a list of every individual on earth
who actually did not need emergency financial assistance from the United
States government, and then handed them the keys to the public treasure.
The Fed sent billions in bailout aid to
Mexico, Bahrain and Bavaria, billions more to a spate of
Japanese car companies, more than $2 trillion in loans each to
Citigroup and Morgan Stanley, and billions more to a string of lesser
millionaires and billionaires with Cayman Islands addresses.”
Hoping to conceal their pilferage, the Federal Reserve and its
criminal associates erected a dense thicket of bureaucratic buzzwords and
arcane acronyms. Many people are familiar with the Troubled Asset Relief
Program (TARP); fewer are acquainted with the Term Asset-Backed Securities
Loan Facility (TALF), whic is an even more brazen enterprise in official
plunder than TARP.
“Created just after Barack Obama’s election in November 2008, the [TALF]
program’s ostensible justification was to spur more consumer lending, which
had dried up in the midst of the financial crisis,” Taibbi reports. “But
instead of lending directly to car buyers and credit-card holders and
students — that would have been socialism! — the Fed handed out a
trillion dollars to banks and hedge funds, almost interest-free. In
other words, the government lent taxpayer money to the same
[miscreants] who caused the crisis, so that they could then lend that
money back out on the market virtually risk-free, at an enormous
profit.”
“...wait, there’s more!” Taibbi elaborates. “A key aspect of TALF is that
the Fed doles out the money through what are known as non-recourse loans.
Essentially, this means that if you don’t pay the Fed back, it’s no big
deal. ... If the securities lose money, you leave them on the Fed’s lap and
the public eats the loss. But if they make money, you take them back, cash
them in and repay the funds you borrowed from the Fed.”(5)
This is corporate socialism of an unusually pure variety: Risks
are subsidized, profits are privatized, and losses are socialized.
Even without directly imposing a tax increase, the Fed is redistributing
wealth from the lower and middle class into the hands of the criminal elite;
it is doing so by stealing the value of everything we earn and save through
inflation....
The old and the new paradigms
of war

The war paradigm [see introductory quotes]
with which Madison was familiar was one in which professional
militaries would contend at a strict reserve from civilian populations,
sparing non-combatants and most of society’s productive capacity.
True, that standard was violated on many occasions. The Thirty Years’ War
that ulcerated Europe in the 17th Century saw massacres of the helpless and
similar depredations on such a scale that in 1648 the leaders of the newly
formed European nation-states devised the Peace of Westphalia, which was
intended to codify Christian-inspired rules of conduct in warfare.(5)
Madison and the other framers paid homage to
such principles when they referred to “the laws of nations” (Article One,
Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution). Similarly, by giving Congress sole
power to commit the U.S. government to war, Madison and his colleagues
sought to chain the dogs of war, in order to preserve the liberties and
prosperity of Americans against the ambitions of those who would seek to
aggrandize themselves through war.
Madison’s 1795 warning was timely then, and seems eerily prescient today.
Even as the words were formed by Madison’s pen, a different and deadlier
doctrine of warfare was being pioneered in Revolutionary France — the
total mobilization of society by a totalitarian ruling vanguard claiming a
mission to “emancipate” the world through aggressive violence.
It was in the French Revolution, notes Dr. David A. Bell of Johns Hopkins
University, that the doctrine of “total war” was devised and first
put into practice during the period of 1792-1815 — that is, the period
beginning with the Great Terror, and ending with Waterloo and the Congress
of Vienna.(6)
The “Wars of Revolution and Empire”
involved not only invasions of France’s neighbors, but also
the slaughter of the refractory Christians of La Vendee — a
department of devout Catholics who refused to surrender their children as
conscripts to serve in the impious armies of the Jacobin regime.(7)
“The city of Lyons shall be destroyed,” announced the revolutionary
Committee on Public Safety on October 12, 1792, after the Jacobins seized
control of that Royalist stronghold. The population was systematically
disarmed, revolutionary “tribunals” were established to identify those
worthy of summary execution, and paramilitary police
(actually, street criminals armed and paid by the regime) were deployed to
hunt down “counter-revolutionaries."(8)
Redistribution of wealth at bayonet
point was a conspicuous part of the program, as well: “Every
habitation of the rich shall be demolished; there shall remain only the
homes of the poor, the houses of the patriots who have been led astray or
proscribed.”
All of this is quite familiar to students of modern “wars of
liberation” as fought by Soviet Russia and their proxies — and,
increasingly, as carried out by the socialist clique infesting
Washington, D.C.
The Jacobin regime eventually wouldn’t settle for anything less than
annihilating its enemies outright: “The name of Lyons shall be effaced from
the list of cities of the Republic.... On the ruins of Lyon shall be raised
a column attesting to posterity the crimes and the punishment of the
royalists of the city, with this inscription: ‘Lyons made war on Liberty.
Lyons is no more.”(9)
The “Liberty” referred to in that cynical pronouncement, of course,
meant “freedom” from the tenets of Christian civilization
— the “freedom” to submit to the supposedly enlightened beings using mass
murder and terror to forge a new order built on
explicit rebellion to God’s law, and aggressive disregard for
individual rights.
By 1795 — the year James Madison warned about the destructive consequences
of “perpetual warfare,” Revolutionary France was pioneering the science of
modern genocide in its campaign against the valiant Vendeans. The
patently demonic bloodlust of the Jacobin junta actually provoked the
condemnation of some of its allies — who were committed to revolutionary
violence in principle, but hindered by basic decency when the time came to
put it into practice.
“As early as 1795, the proto-Communist agitator Gracchus Babeuf
accused the Revolutionary government of ‘turning the scythe of death against
the totality of the Vendean race’ and called its representative in Nantes,
Jean-Baptise Carrier, ‘populicidal,” recalls Dr. Bell.(10)
The term “populicide” is a forerunner to R.J. Rummel’s
expression “democide” — the mass murder of entire
populations by governments ruling them.
Carrier, who was essentially the head of the Jacobin regime’s secret police,
was one of the most loathsome figures in recorded history. In The Unsleeping
Eye: Secret Police and Their Victims,
(11) Australian historian Robert J. Stove
points out that “Carrier cultivated such pastimes as repeatedly flinging
himself on the floor, ‘howling and snapping like a madman,’ and committing
mass infanticide (he called children ‘little wheips ... they must be
butchered without mercy’) by ordering the shooting and clubbing to death
of five hundred peasant boys and girls.”
Carrier and his troops filled prisons throughout Nantes to capacity with
men, women, and children. Some jails were so tightly packed that many
perished from asphyxiation. Typhus and other diseases claimed many more.
Carrier invoked the lack of prison space as
evidence that Nantes suffered from “overpopulation,” thereby
providing a pretext to implement some of the Revolution’s schemes for “depopulation.”
“We will make France graveyard, rather than not regenerate it in our own
way,” he proclaimed.
One of Carrier’s most fiendishly inventive programs for “regeneration” was
the noyade -- mass drowning of prisoners conducted in the Loire River. In
Citizens, (12)
his comprehensive narrative of the French Revolution, British historian
Simon Schama recalls:
“Holes were punched in the sides of
flat-bottomed barges below the waterline, over which wooden planks were
nailed to keep the boats temporarily afloat. Prisoners were put in with
their hands and feet tied and the boats pushed into the center of the
river to catch the current. The executioner-boatmen then broke or
removed the planks and made haste to jump into boats that were
alongside, while the victims helplessly watched the water rise above
them.”(13)
Carrier’s sadistic troops called these
mass drownings “Republican baptisms.” Occasionally this ritualized mass
murder was accompanied by “Republican marriages,” in which male and female
victims were stripped and tied together before being sent to the river’s
bottom. “We are packing all these rogues into boats which we then send to
the bottom,” gloated one Republican leader. “In truth, if these brigands
complained that they were dying of hunger, they at least cannot complain
that we are now letting them die of thirst.”(14)
Charles Philippe Henri Ronsin, a prominent Republican revolutionary,
“proposed systematic ‘depopulation,’ with the ‘brigands’ deported and
dispersed throughout France or sent to Madagascar,” relates Schama. “In
their place legions of ‘pure’ French colonists would settle the country
and breed families untainted by [the faithful Vendeans’] crime.”
Apparently considering this scheme as too
humane, Carrier drew up plans for chemical warfare - depositing arsenic
in wells across the Vendee. Jean Antoine, a member of the ultra-radical
Paris Commune, presented an even more sophisticated program for mass murder:
He asked a distinguished chemist to explore the possibility of using “mines,
gassings, or other means to be able to destroy ... or asphyxiate the enemy”
in the Vendee.
The campaign of “depopulation” in Revolutionary France is the distant but
unmistakable ancestor of the totalitarian systems of democide that
incarnadined the pages of 20th Century history with the blood of at least
170,000,000 people. The Satanic gospel promoted by the Jacobins and their
allies and ideological progeny — the “worship of collective human power”
through the State, as Arnold Toynbee described it — is the official creed of
the Brotherhood of Darkness controlling the government that rules us.(15)
We’re occasionally given a candid glimpse of that creed, as when former
President George W. Bush, in a fit of enraptured self-approval, used his
second inaugural address to describe the disastrous wars he began in
Afghanistan and Iraq as growing out of
“the great liberating tradition of this
nation... By our efforts, we have lit a fire
as well — a fire in the minds of men. It warms those
who feel its power, it burns those who fight
its progress, and one day this
untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world.”

As
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington documented in a book taking the
phrase as its title (17),
the expression “Fire in the Minds of Men” is derived directly from the same
anti-Christian vision of political redemption through mass bloodshed that
began in France’s Revolutionary Terror.
The “fire” spoken of by Bush is not the “sacred fire of
liberty” invoked by George Washington; it is the work of ideological
incendiaries who have set the world on fire in the hope of destroying
everything that makes decent and civilized life possible. They have set
entire nations aflame; they have vaporized immeasurable volumes of honestly
earned wealth; they have put entire populations to the torch — and their
lust for destruction is not sated.
In their arrogance, the Brotherhood of Darkness pretends not to know that
there is a cleansing fire of a different kin that they will face someday.
May God hasten that day — and strengthen our resolve to live by His law, as
our nation endures what may be its terminal crisis.
Clarification:
In the previous installment of the Radio Liberty Newsletter, I misattributed
a source regarding the CIA’s role in bringing Muamar Ghadaffi to power in
Libya. Eric Margolis, the widely respected foreign correspondent (who
interviewed the Libyan despot in person on several occasions, including a
visit just days after the U.S. air strike in 1986) has written a great deal
on the CIA’s role in elevating Ghadaffi and fortifying his hold on power.
Here are two key citations:
“Back in 1969, Britain ran oil-rich Libya through a puppet ruler, King
Idriss. The U.S. coveted Libya’s oil. So the CIA mounted a coup against
Idris and helped into power an unknown officer, Moammar Khadaffy. But
instead of being a puppet, the eccentric Khadaffy emerged as an ardent Arab
nationalist.”(17)
“In the late 1970’s, CIA sent [Edwin] Wilson and [Frank] Terpil to Libya to
covertly strengthen the regime of Muammar Khadaffi. Washington planned to
use the fiery Libyan leader as its strongman in North Africa, just as it was
using longtime CIA ‘asset’ Anwar Sadat in Egypt.””(18)

The Brotherhood of Darkness toppled the dictatorial regimes in Egypt and
Tunisia, fomented the bloody revolt in Libya, financed the violent uprising
in Syria, and promoted the unrest that exists in Algeria, Morocco, Jordan,
