Managing change. The Peril of Polls: "In the ongoing paradigm shift from a culture of conscience to a culture of consensus, where the word of the group rather than of the Word of God determines one’s feelings, beliefs and values, it is becoming increasingly clear that we have made polls and surveys the new measure of our morality, worth and progress here in America....
"Surveys, like consensus, are more often than not, used to SHAPE public opinion rather than TAKE public opinion. And until we understand just how deceptive the consensus process is and how it is used against us in every segment of society, including the church, we will not recognize the perilous road we are on." REMEMBERING THE OTHERS
Paul Proctor
January 29, 2003
We’re going to war with Iraq in a few days essentially because terrorists killed almost 2800 people at the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. You can argue the point that it’s really about oil, or about some new world order agenda, or about a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein for his failed attempt on the life of George W’s father a few years back or that it’s just a preventative measure to thwart any future nuclear, chemical or biological attack from Babylon. The fact remains - we wouldn’t be preparing for what may well end up being World War III had 2792 people not died on that terrible day.
Wasn’t it the deaths of 2403 people on December 7th, 1941 in Pearl Harbor that propelled America, in all its rage, into World War II? Apparently, when we hear of innocent people dying unspeakable deaths and see the smoke of injustice rise over the fruited plain, it doesn’t take the voice of an angry president to prick the conscience of America into action. All it takes are the words of a few shaken witnesses and a couple of horrendous pictures.
We gasp at the thought of 2800 innocent people dying at the hands of adventurous men who have little or no regard for human life. On days that these bloody massacres occur, America jumps to attention ready and willing to storm the enemy’s camp and deny them even one more day to inflict their pain and terror.
Yet, for some reason, nothing has been said about the other 3700 that were killed on September 11th, 2001. Not a word. You see - that’s about how many babies are massacred in the womb EACH AND EVERY DAY here in America and most of us couldn’t care less. Why is that? Out of sight - out of mind? Not enough fire, screaming or panic in the streets? Is it because their names don’t scroll down our TV screens at dinnertime while quaint little homemade videos full of laughter and memories take us back to better days when their hearts beat without a care in the world?
What’s left to say about abortion that hasn’t already been said? I just thought it was worth mentioning, as we send two to three hundred thousand soldiers to the other side of the planet in response to the 2800 lives lost on 911, that we remember the other 3700 who died that day and EVERY DAY FOR THE LAST THIRTY YEARS. God does – all 41 million of them.
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them." - Psalm 139:13-16
