Resisting Immorality

The visual images once hidden in Playboy calendars now captivate the public imagination through newspapers, television, billboards, movies -- and especially, the Internet...  What God calls evil -- a promiscuous imagination -- has become both normal and politically correct. How, then, can we, who long to follow Jesus, resist their mental and spiritual seductions and keep our hearts pure?

"...the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth."  Genesis 8:21

"Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God."  1 Corinthians 6:9-11 These words are for those who have trusted in His redemption, repented of their sins, received the gift of forgiveness and eternal life through Christ and been joined to Him through the cross.. The next section follows:

"Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For 'the two,' He says, 'shall become one flesh.' But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee sexual immorality."  1 Corinthians 6:15-18

"I have made a covenant with my eyes;
Why then should I look upon a young woman?...
Does He not see my ways, and count all my steps? ...
If my step has turned from the way, or my heart walked after my eyes...
If my heart has been enticed by a woman... that would be wickedness...

Iniquity deserving of judgment.." Job 31:1-12

"For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery..." Mark 7:21

"He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,
He who despises the gain of oppressions,
Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
And shuts his eyes from seeing evil: He will dwell on high;
His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks...." Isaiah 33:15

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."  Galatians 5:19-21

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell."  Matthew 5:27-29

"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life."  Galatians 6:7-8

"Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us." Titus 2:6-8

"Flee sexual immorality..." 1 Corinthians 6:18

"To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech." Proverbs 8:13

"...rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips." Colossians 3:8

"Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing that should not be done." Genesis 34:7

"To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech." Proverbs 8:13

"I will set nothing wicked before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness."  Psalm 101:2-4

"My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net." Psalm 25:15

"Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way."  Psalm 119:38-39

"Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
I am a stranger in the earth; do not hide Your commandments from me."  Psalm 119:18-19

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth." Psalm 121:1-2

"But my eyes are upon You, O God the Lord; in You I take refuge...
Keep me from the snares they have laid for me,
And from the traps of the workers of iniquity."  Psalm 141:8-9

"My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands within you.
Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye....
That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
From the seductress who flatters with her words
.
I perceived among the youths, a young man devoid of understanding,
Passing along the street near her corner; and he took the path to her house
In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night.
And there a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart.
She was loud and rebellious, her feet would not stay at home.
At times she was outside, at times in the open square, lurking at every corner.
So she caught him and kissed him;
With an impudent face she said to him:
“I... came out to meet you
, diligently to seek your face, and I have found you....
Come, let us take our fill of love until morning....
With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
With her flattering lips she seduced him.
Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter,
Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks....

He did not know it would cost his life.

Now therefore, listen to me, my children;
Pay attention to the words of my mouth:
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways,
Do not stray into her paths...
Her house is the way to hell,
Descending to the chambers of death."  Proverb 7:1-2, 5, 7-15, 18, 21-27

Oswald Chambers: "Moral problems are only solved by obedience... Intellectually things can be worked out, but morally the solution is only reached by obedience. One step in obedience is worth years of study, and will take us into the center of God's will for us." (The Shadow of an Agony, 1934)

To prepare His people for future events, Jesus told His disciples,

"Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near... Watch therefore...." Matthew  24:32-33, 42
